Tips
Aloe Vera plant tips: How to remove the gel from inside the leaves. Remove a healthy leaf from the bottom of the plant. Then cut off a section of leaf to the size you need. Cut off the pointy spines. Remove the outer skin (like you were filleting a fish). This will expose the gel inside the leaf. Gel will be slippery and kind of sticky to handle, this is very normal.
I found using an electric hand held mixer very useful to break up the gel. I then used the back of a desert spoon to push the gel through a sieve that had small holes to remove any lumps as this made the gel more liquid to use with my products. This worked very well for me.
Any leftover Aloe Vera leaf - place a plastic wrap over the exposed ends, place in the refrigerator. Should keep for a couple of weeks.
Mix up some Aloe Vera gel with orange juice or apple juice and drink it. Do a Google search on the benefits of Aloe Vera, you might be very surprised.

Tips for Lotions and Creams
- When mixing in the hot water, consider using an electric hand held mixer.
- Once all the ingredients have been combined and the mixture is still warm enough to pour, carefully pour it into your favourite jar that has a lid. Place the lid on (to stop a skin forming), but not to tight, as the mixture needs to totally cool.
- When adding the essential oil, the fragrance should be to your personal liking. You can add more or add less fragrance or perhaps you'd prefer no fragrance at all and would choose to leave it out altogether.
- If needed, use more oil or water to make thinner and use more beeswax to make thicker.
- Experiment with your product. Tweak the ingredients to your personal liking.
- These products will last several months. Add a "date made" label to the jar. Depending on the climatic conditions the "use by date" on the product will vary.
- When making a large amount of creams or lotions, place what you need in an everyday jar and place the remainder in the refrigerator. Placing your home made product in the refrigerator will prolong the self life, especially when you are not using preservatives. When or if mould forms discard the product.
- Preservatives: - use grapefruit extract, rosemary extract, Optiphen plus, calendula extract.
- Anti-bacterial: - use lavender essential oil, tea tree essential oil
- Vitamin E - is not only an anti-oxidant, it also adds "shelf-life" to the product.
